More than boiling water

What sort of supplies, or “hoodoo voodoo” as one parent put it, are brought to a home birth? Everything stocked in a typical birth center should also be brought to a home birth. Some ask, “Well, then why go to a birth center?” That’s a great question! Why many families choose a birth center for their birth can be explored in another post.

This is a non-inclusive list of the typical supplies brought to a Rewilding home birth:

NEONATAL EQUIPMENT

  • stethoscope

  • tape measure 

  • thermometer

  • bulb syringe 

  • hanging scale 

  • oxygen tank & supplies

  • resuscitation equipment

  • pulse oximeter

  • heel sticks

  • umbilical clamps

  • newborn medications as applicable

  • sterile & clean gloves

  • sterilized instruments 

MATERNAL EQUIPMENT

  • stethoscope

  • blood pressure cuff

  • thermometer

  • Doppler

  • oxygen tank & supplies

  • sterile syringes & needles

  • IV fluids and supplues

  • medications &antibiotics

  • glucometer

  • urine strips 

  • sterile & clean gloves 

  • Amnihook / Amnicot

  • urinary catheters

  • sharps container 

  • sutures (Vicryl, Chromic; RB, SH, CT)

  • lidocaine

  • sterilized instruments 

  • herbal tinctures

  • essential oils 

The goal is to leave the majority untouched, but it is reassuring to know it’s there!
